Funeral Services Do Not Have to be Expensive

It will cost you much more to leave this world than come into it. The average funeral costs anywhere from $8,000 to $12,000 per person based on today's industry standards. However, there are ways to reduce those costs without sacrificing quality or amenities. The key to lowering funeral costs is planning.

Pre-planning your services is a wise and intelligent decision. Many people do not realize the cost and heartache it causes their loved ones once they pass away particularly if the departure is unexpected. Unplanned funeral services can be expensive.

First, preplanning can help lower the costs. Discuss funeral arrangement with a spouse, loved one or parent. Know what one wants and record those wishes in writing. Does one want to be cremated quickly, with no ceremony? Or, does one want a large funeral with a choir -- but absolutely no fancy headstone? Lack of communication is costly. There are more psychological factors surrounding death than any other emotion or life experience. By pre-planning during a less emotional time, wishes and options can be discussed.

Secondly, costs widely vary so comparison shopping is important. Many survivors don't comparison shop because they regard it as an affront to the dead. However, paying more than is necessary is hardly a noble tribute. It is worthwhile to make a couple of quick telephone calls or searching on the internet to compare prices once a loved-one dies.

Most people choose a funeral home for the wrong reasons: It's close to their house, or it has served their family in the past. The range of prices offered by various funeral homes for comparable services is incredibly broad. Each Funeral Home will have a various levels of services available. By doing a little research and being flexible, you will develop several options for consideration.

Don't feel pressured to purchase the most expensive. Funeral Homes must disclose pricing information so be sure to ask.
