James N. Hurd, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 after a long illness. He was born February 22, 1928. A native Houstonian, he was the son of James A. Hurd and Charlotte Key Hurd.

He graduated from Reagan High School in 1946, and later attended Texas A&M and graduated from U of H in 1957 with a degree in Civil Engineering. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. During his career he worked for several engineering firms, including Brown & Root, Kelso Interests of Galveston,was a partner in Continental Construction Inc., and retired from Laidlaw Environmental Services.

He contributed to the construction of numerous bridges in the Houston area, and bridges along the original Pan American Highway. He was also involved in
the building of the Houston Astrodome.

He was a charter member of St. Thomas More Catholic Church, and was active in the Streamliners Senior Group, being one of the original members. He was a volunteer in the Senior Senate of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston for many years.

Jim was preceded in death by his daughter, Teresa. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marjorie; sister, Muriel Sneller of Put-In-Bay, Ohio; sons, James II, Stephen, Michael, and his wife Karen; grandson, Christopher and his fiancé Priscilla; granddaughters, Jessica and Julia; and great-grandson Giovani, all of Houston.

Visitation will be from 6:30 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:30 p.m., Monday, January 30, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft Ave., Houston, TX 77096. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the family graciously suggests that contributions in James’ name be made to Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America.
