Mary Jane Wieser Coke

Mary Jane Wieser Coke, 89, joined her Heavenly Father, August 11, 2017. She was born on September 1, 1927 to Mary Iris Gordon Wieser and Rudolph John Wieser. She was born in San Antonio, Texas and moved to Houston at the age of three months and Houston was her home the rest of her life. She attended Eastwood Elementary, Stonewall Jackson Jr High, Stephen F. Austin Sr High School and the University of Houston.
Mary was the eldest of three children. She had two brothers, Joseph Henry Wieser and Rudolph Paul Wieser.
Mary married her childhood sweetheart Edwin Lenwood Coke in 1945 and that marriage brought about four children, Mary Lorena Dryden, Loretta Lenne Ziegler, John Edwin Coke, Gordon Paul Coke. She was a devoted, loving mother and her children were her pride and joy.
Mary became a buyer with the Globe Co. which was owned by the Walgreens Co. and was the fifth female buyer in Houston in 1948. She retired in 1978 after a 30-year career. She was in Houston for six weeks and two weeks in New York on a merchandise buying trips. She saw Mary Martin on Broadway in “South Pacific” and was in New York when General MacArthur was in a ticker tape parade upon his arrival back to the United States. She danced on New Year’s Eve with Guy Lombardo at the Waldorf Astoria and had strawberry cheesecake with Ed Sullivan at Lindy’s.
Mary was a great fundraiser, for several charitable organizations, raising great sums of revenue in planning activities for those organizations.
With her personality, she was very outgoing and has made many friends of all ages.
Mary is survived by her son, John Edwin Coke and wife Carla; daughter-in-law, Tana Coke; grandchildren, Haley Coke, Chelsea Parker and husband Tyler, Samuel Coke and wife Melissa, Shelby Coke, Heather Valigura and husband Eddie, Lauren Alvarado and husband Marty, Sean Kilgore and wife Tiffany, Ryan Insell and wife Jessica, Sarah Orr and husband Josh; 12 great-grandchildren; nephew and niece, Sam Reese and wife Shirley; great-nieces and nephew, Cindy Adkins, Mike Reese, Lisa Myers.
A Visitation will be held on August 16, 2017 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church, 10330 Hillcroft Street, Houston, Texas 77096 at 9:30 am with the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am, with the burial following at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Houston, Texas 77023 at 2:00 pm
