| Kenneth Carr Chambliss | ||||
KENNETH CARR CHAMBLISS, 72, was born in Clarksdale, Mississippi on September 23, 1935 to Clem and Polly Chambliss. With his family surrounding him and being held in the arms of his wife of 53 years, Mary Davidson Chambliss, Carr went to be with his Lord on May 2, 2008 in Houston, Texas. Mary will miss him deeply and will love Carr “till forever passes by.” His children Lee Chambliss Holt (Steve), Margaret Chambliss Carnett (Robert), and Kenneth Carr Chambliss, Jr. will continue to be blessed by their father. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren John Carr Harvey; Casey Harvey Garcia (Tim); Mary Caitlin, Julie, and Caroline Carnett; Harrison and Parker Chambliss; Rebecca Marie Rodriguez; and Addison Garcia will be reflections of his strength, integrity, and wit. Carr moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama at age fifteen where he met Mary when they were 10th graders at Tuscaloosa High School. He graduated from the University of Alabama, served his country in the Korean War as a Captain, and went on to earn a Master’s Degree from University of Alabama. His career in international maritime insurance took Carr and his family from one corner of the world to another before settling in Houston in 1978. Such a full life was truly made complete when, at age 69, Carr realized that a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and His grace were to be his greatest treasures. Carr’s most fervent prayers were that he would know Jesus fully and that his children and grandchildren would know Him, as well. Others who survive Carr and who will remember him with great affection include his siblings, Gerry Chambliss, Hugh Chambliss, Carol Chambliss Moreland, and Norma Chambliss Newton; and his many cousins, nieces, and nephews, all who have shared a great fondness for Carr over the years and will miss him dearly. Carr’s family is deeply grateful for those who aided him during his illness. |

| Adrianus Cornelius "Kees" Jobsis | ||||
ADRIANUS CORNELIUS "KEES" JOBSIS, beloved husband, father and grandfather, departed this life on March 30, 2008. Born on September 21, 1929, Kees was a charismatic adventurer and romantic, with a brilliant, creative and intuitive mind, vibrant personality, sharp wit, and kind and generous heart. His passions included travel, exploration, nature, sailing, diving, music, and the literary and visual arts. An admired and respected civil engineer with Royal Dutch Shell and later Texaco, Kees was also an accomplished artist, creating poems, stories, writings, drawings, paintings, and photographs of remarkable insight and sensitivity. Born to Dutch parents, Annie Gieben and Gerrit Jobsis, on Billiton Island, Indonesia (then part of the Dutch East Indies), Kees enjoyed an idyllic early childhood as part of a privileged family within a refined Dutch colonial community (his father was a senior executive with the Dutch Billiton Tin Company). Kees roamed and explored his beloved island with unbridled freedom and childish wonder. It was there that Kees developed deep respect and appreciation of nature and cultural differences. While Kees was known for his strong will and sometime rebellious spirit, he was universally adored, with his elementary school teacher (who often referred to him as "the little rascal") still chuckling about his antics and fondly corresponding with him regularly into old age. Kees' idyllic early childhood on Billiton Island came to an abrupt end during World War II at age 13, when Kees and his family were separated and forced into concentration camps by the Japanese. Kees survived the horrors and trauma of his incarceration through wits, inner strength and fighting spirit. Sadly, Kees never saw his father again. While the torture he was forced to endure and witness haunted him for life, he never allowed it to define his existence and seldom spoke of the experiences. That determination to survive enabled him to rise like a phoenix from the ashes again and again throughout his life. Ever the flamboyant, charismatic romantic, he followed his dreams and lived life to its fullest. With fierce determination, he accelerated his education from the years lost. Brilliant mathematically, he earned undergraduate and advanced degrees in science in both the Netherlands and the United States. He became a highly successful civil engineer, troubleshooting and managing projects for Texaco throughout the world. He also had an academic post with the Institute of Technology in the Middle East. During his career, he was accredited several patents and awards for his inventions, designs and contributions in the energy industry. Known as a handsome charmer, Kees, along with his lovely wife, Bouk (known also as "Bea"), were gracious hosts and easily transcended cultural differences to forge lifelong international friendships. Together with their two daughters, they enjoyed an international life in Europe, the Middle East, and the United States (immigrating to the United States in 1964 and proudly becoming American citizens), eventually making Houston, Texas their home. Their marriage was a love affair lasting over 51 years. In 1976 Kees suffered a traumatic spinal cord injury, which resulted in permanent partial paralysis. He courageously fought his physical disabilities and continued to live life on his terms. He later joined the technology department at Texaco, and took up scuba diving exploring the depths and beauty of the underwater world. He called the water "the great equalizer," and took other paralyzed friends (made during rehabilitation at TIRR) diving to experience freedom from physical limitations. After giving up their sailboats, Kees and Bouk continued to cruise and travel the world together. He adored his daughters and their families and was a genuinely loving, supportive and protective family man. He generously shared his passions with them and encouraged theirs. He was deeply loved and is greatly missed. Kees is survived by his wife, Bouk de Vries Jobsis, his daughters, Janneke Margeret Jobsis Brown and Anna Jobsis Nemeth, son-in-laws, Donald Brown and Peter Nemeth, grandchildren, Alexandra Nemeth, Nicholas Nemeth and Dakota Adrian Brown, his brother Harman Jobsis, and sister, Mechtelien de Haan-Jobsis. Kees' parents and brother Gerrit Jobsis predeceased him. The family wishes to specifically acknowledge the kind and dedicated care and compassion of Kees' cardiologist, Dr. Madjid ("Mirzai") Mirzaitehrane. A private family memorial at sea will be held. In addition, arrangements are being made for a memorial service for friends of the family to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Kees' name to Texas Rehabilitation and Research ("TIRR"). |

| Virgil C. Fruth | ||||
VIRGIL CHARLES FRUTH Virgil was born February 5, 1925 in Lilbourne, Missouri and died at the age of 83 on February 14, 2008, in his Houston home. Houston has been home to Virgil and his family for the past 45 years. He was a devoted husband to his beloved Jeannie for 54 years and a dedicated and giving father, grandfather, father-in-law, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. Virgil was a brilliant financial investor, but he'd always worked hard too. Even as a young boy, spraying apple trees with his father, he drug a hose many times his size and weight through the orchards. Always industrious, as a youth he earned 50 cents per week, lighting the stove each day for his teacher at the schoolhouse. In 1943, Virgil graduated from Napoleon High School in Ohio. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy to Officer Candidate School. On February 19, 1944, he earned his Commission, his Ensign promotion to Officer. He learned of the honor via a congratulatory telegram sent to him by his older brother Lloyd and his wife Katy. Virgil attended and graduated from The University of Pennsylvania's highly esteemed Wharton School with a BS in Economics. He married Betty Jean Bettridge April 5, 1947 in Napoleon, Ohio; they were united in marriage in the living room of his parents, Edward Harmon and Freada Emma Fruth. Virgil worked for Gulf Oil Company for 37 years as a Financial Forecaster and Analyst. He was transferred from Toledo, Ohio, to Houston, in 1963. Retiring from Gulf in 1985, he maintained friends with many of his colleague's, even to date. While dedicated and hardworking, Virgil was never `married' to his work. He pursued many hobbies with great passion, over the years. He was an avid and accomplished bowler. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America for nearly two decades, leading Troop 177 to Philmont Scout Ranch in NM and countless other camping expeditions and Jamboree's. Virgil earned the highest leadership honor in scouting, the Silver Beaver Award, for his many years of dedicated service. Also, he and Jeannie were avid line dancers who enjoyed practicing and participating in local expositions. A master at the card games Pinochle and Euchre, he won the last Pinochle game he played on Feb 2, 2008, partnering with his son Rob, defeating his daughter Lori and son-in-law Mike; he enjoyed a rare `Double Pinochle' that game as well. There is no doubt that one of Virgil's favorite pastimes was cycling. Virgil joined the Houston Bicycle Club in 1974 and served as President for the 1977-1978 term, and as an officer in various capacities for much of the 1970's. In 1985 Virgil got his first tandem, and from then on he and Jeannie were a tandem team. Virgil was instrumental in starting the Houston Area Tandem Society (HATS) in 1986, and also had served as President. Virgil and Jeannie toured in England and all over the United States. They attended many tandem rallies including the Southwest Tandem Rally, Midwest Tandem Rally and the Northwest Tandem Rally. They also loved cycling in the Richmond/Rosenberg area as well as the Texas Hill Country. Virgil loved to bike and he and Jeannie made many long-time friends through cycling. Virgil also loved traveling and going on cruises. He and his brother Larry and wife Barbara, brother Lloyd and wife Katy, and brother Melvin and wife Marshann, often met at the Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera, Texas or in Branson, Missouri, for food, fun and family. Often they cruised together too, or he and Jeannie would travel with close friends. They cruised from the Eastern to the Western Caribbean as well as to Alaska, Hawaii, Germany, Austria, Scotland, England and Canada, making friendships that were, despite the miles, often maintained indefinitely. Virgil was preceded in death by his wife, Jeannie Fruth, his son, Richard Virgil Fruth, his brother, Melvin Fruth and his parents, Edward and Freada Fruth. He is survived by his daughter, Lori Ann Fruth and her husband Mike Kupsinel, his son Robert Charles Fruth and his grandson, Jason Fruth, his daughter-in-law, Marlene Fruth and his granddaughter, Sarah Fruth, his brother Lloyd Fruth and wife Katy, his brother Larry Fruth and wife Barbara and his sister-in-law Marshann Fruth. He is also survived and will be greatly missed by his lifelong neighbor and friend, Calvin Pickard and countless other friends and neighbors. Last but not least, he is survived by his favorite grand-pup, Noah. Virgil's church family meant a great deal to him. Our family appreciates everyone at Gethsemane who embraced him after the losses of Jeannie and Richard. Our heartfelt thanks to Dr. Chris Logothetis and his team at M.D. Anderson, including but not limited to, Geo, Cynthia, Claudette, Donnah, Valerie, Lisa and Betsy for a decade of kind and compassionate support. A gathering of friends and family will be held on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 4:00 p.m. at Gethsemane Methodist Church, 6856 Bellaire Blvd., Houston, Texas, 77074, (713) 774-7693 for a Memorial Service, followed immediately, at the church, by fellowship and BBQ from the Swinging Door. Those wishing to honor Virgil with Memorial contributions may send them to M.D. Anderson Cancer Research or the American Heart Institute in his name. |
