Obituary for Catherine Mary Smith Calnon

Catherine Mary Calnon (nee Smith), 95, passed away peacefully on June 7, 2018 in Houston, Texas. Catherine was born in Louisville, NY on April 30, 1923 along with her twin sister, Carroll.
Catherine was the daughter of the late Florence and Anna (Carroll) Smith. She graduated from Massena Central High School in 1942 and went to work at Alcoa Corporation. On November 24, 1951, she married Robert ("Bob") Calnon at St. Lawrence Church in Louisville, NY. The couple settled in Madrid where, together, they purchased and operated Calnon's Texaco Station for over 30 years.
Catherine and Bob were partners in business and in life. They were known for their hospitality and integrity. Many memorable times were shared at the store and their home. They never met a stranger (and if they did, they promptly offered him food and drink).
Catherine is survived by her daughters, Patricia (Jim) Allen and Jane Jurgens of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Kaitlyn (Jesus) Pacheco, Jeffrey Allen, Bridget Allen, Emily Jurgens, and Kathleen (Adam) McLain; and great-grandchildren, Santiago and Gabriel Pacheco.
She also leaves behind her twin sister, Carroll White and brother, Donald Smith, both of Massena, NY; her sister, Barbara Bradley of Memphis, NY; her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Calnon of Liverpool, NY; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Catherine was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Leon, Lloyd, and Lawrence; sisters, Ruth Shoen, Blanche Smith, Ann McConnell, and June Clunn. The love of her life, Bob Calnon, died November 25, 1988.
After Bob died, Catherine moved to Massena to be close to her siblings, and began spending winters in Houston. In 2005, Catherine moved to Houston permanently so she could participate in raising her grandchildren, which she did actively and with the full force of her love, wit, wisdom, and baked goods. There, she made many friends. She shared her talents in the kitchen with one and all. She enjoyed playing cards, evening cocktails, crocheting, and making her grand- and great-grandchildren laugh.
A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Memorial Park, 6622 Haskell St, Houston, TX 77007, on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. with Reverend Phil Lloyd, officiating.
Catherine will be laid to rest next to her husband, Bob in St. Mary's Cemetery, Canton, NY at a later date.
In Catherine's memory, donations may be made to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.
