Obituary for Martin O. Brown

Martin O. Brown passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 31, 2018, at the age of 95. Martin was married to Gloria Wilson Brown for almost 60 years, and they were together at his passing. Martin served in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II, and upon his return, he attended Rice Institute. It was there he met Gloria, and though several years apart in age, they graduated together from Rice in 1950, and were married in 1958. Their children are Martin Wilson (Buster) Brown and Grace-Marie Brown Kolb. Martin worked for many years with the Texas Highway Department, first in Houston, then as Resident Engineer for 18 years in Bay City, Texas. Martin knew every mile of road in Matagorda County. He returned to Houston for several years, then retired with over 40 years of service to the Department.
While living in Bay City, Martin taught his children to fish in Matagorda Bay, to waterski on the Colorado River and to birdwatch every day.
Martin loved his family and was proud of his grandchildren Theresa Brown Helvenston and husband Andrew,Christopher Brown, Joseph Kolb, Anne-Marie Kolb, Elizabeth Kolb and Cecilia Kolb. He was also extremely proud of his great-grandson Colin Brown Helvenston.
Martin is survived by his wife, Gloria Wilson Brown; son, Buster Brown and wife Leslie; daughter, Grace-Marie Kolb and husband Randy; grandchildren and great-grandson. He is also survived by his youngest brother, Richard Brown, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
