Obituary for Suzanne Ehlers Parker

Our beloved Susie (Mom) died January 24, 2018 after a brief battle with endometrial cancer. She was born in Houston October 21, 1933 to Emerence Truyens Ehlers and Dr. H. J. Ehlers. She attended River Oaks Elementary, Kinkaid, Hollins College, and the University of Houston.

She was predeceased by her mother, father and sister, Jacqueline Ehlers Goss; son, Wesley Ehlers Parker. She's survived by husband, A. Wesley Parker (Dad); daughter, Emerence Parker Johnston; son, Jack Ehlers Parker and wife Christine Hudson; granddaughters, Samantha Claire Parker, and Courtney Hudson-Parker; nieces, Alice M. Goss, Suzanne E. Goss, and Jacqueline G. Cathriner.

In the fall of 1949, Catherine Cage, arranged a blind date with Dad that began a five-year courtship and ended in a 63-year marriage. She was a fabulous mother and the best wife a fellow could have. Never knew a stranger and was strong and dear to those she befriended.

A good athlete, Mom lettered in basketball at Kinkaid. She played tennis at the Racquet Club, and later at the Houston Country Club. A hip replacement ended tennis, so golf filled in until her knee gave out.

She was good at bridge. In the 60's the Monday group was formed with friends, Ann, Fanelle, Helen, Jane, Beth, Bebee, Margie, and Nancy. She played in her Wednesday group with Mare, Mary and Ann the week she entered MD Anderson.

When the weather allowed, Suz sat in her elm tree swing, holding court with neighbors, Vivian, Alicia, Angela and George. Maybe she read a book given by Daisy or Tita, or finished a Chronicle crossword puzzle, or SUDOKU. For years she's looked forward to a Carrabba's lunch each Saturday with Anne. Then there were the “Crazy Ladies”, Barbara, Isla, Liney, and Pat, for occasional mischief.

Mom's special passion was her dogs. The all-time favorite was Karl, a runt-of-the-litter Rottweiler that crawled out of the pack to rest his little head on her foot. She scooped him up and loved him like a child for 14 years, until he died in her arms.

Suz didn't care much for road travel unless it was to Santa Fe, or Pirates Beach in Galveston. Roaming the shops, off The Square, across from the La Fonda, with Sandy and Richard, were some of her best times. A summer week at the beach was special, because the whole family was together.

The family thanks Vicki, Berta, and Luz who helped her over the years, and Rolanda, Kay, Lovanna, Loretta and Tee, who took good care of her in her last days.

A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd., Houston, Texas 77056 Thursday, February 1, 2018 at 10:00AM.
