Online Obituaries

Thaine Melvin Manske passed away peacefully on the evening of December 23, 2017. He was born on February 21, 1936 in Elgin, Nebraska to the late Altje and Mel Manske. At the age of one, his family moved to El Campo, Texas, and he was a graduate of the ECHS class of 1954. He was always proud to say that he was from El Campo, Texas.

His love for photography followed him throughout his life. He attended Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, California. When he was 21, he went on the trip of a lifetime from San Francisco to New York City by bicycle with a friend. On his return, he served in the United States Air National Guard.

He was an accomplished photographer, with a long career focused mainly on advertising photography, beginning in Seattle and later establishing his own business in Houston. During his career he was able to work in China, The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, Europe and the Middle East. He served on both the National Board of ASMP, and the local chapter as Chapter President, program director, produced the newsletter, and spent many years as membership chair. His work was often selected for FotoFest, an international photography exhibit in Houston. He was an active volunteer for Flashes of Hope, creating portraits of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses.

He was a devoted member of St. Martins Lutheran and then Christ the King Lutheran Church in Houston. He served on church council, and headed up the church softball team, which he loved. He was the infamous catcher, and always donned his red striped baseball pants, yelling friendly taunts like, Next Victim!

Thaine always felt that his greatest accomplishment was marrying his loving wife Rochelle Wilson Manske, which he did in 1959. Together, they had three children, Kim, Courtney & Craig. He was immensely proud of them all. Throughout his life, he taught his family to love life and make friends with everyone. His sense of humor and zest for life was contagious.

He was preceded in death by his brother Charles, and his parents. He is survived by his wife, Rochelle, and their three children, Kim Riley and husband Allen, Courtney Emken and husband Bart, and Craig Manske and wife Laura; grandchildren Will and Travis Riley, Mason and Gabrielle Emken, and Reed and Sarah Manske. He is also survived by his sister Altje Egmon, his brother Richard Manske, and many nieces and nephews.
