Obituary for Frederic William Wey

Frederic William Wey passed away peacefully on October 28, 2018 in the home of his sister, Jeanne M. Wey of Sugar Land, Texas after a long battle with cancer. Fred was born in Houston, Texas on January 29, 1949 to Herbert and Dorothy Wey. He attended St. Vincent de Paul Elementary School and St. Thomas High School in Houston. He also studied at the University of Houston and the University of Scranton in New York, which is where he received a Bachelor of Theology degree. In the early 1990s Fred relocated to New Mexico and attended New Mexico State University where he received his Masters of Social Work degree. Fred worked with children, youth and families in Deming, NM for several years. He also taught English classes at the Western New Mexico University campus in Silver City, NM as well as the campus in Gallup, NM. He retired from his teaching career while working at the University of New Mexico Zuni campus.

Fred’s home was in Mogollon, a remote old mining town in the mountains of New Mexico. He considered as the greatest accomplishment of his life, the restoration and rededication of the Chapel of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel in the town of Mogollon. Fred worked tirelessly for 20+ years with government and church officials of New Mexico, along with the support of his brother, Robert Wey and wife Judy, to make the restoration complete. The Chapel of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was rededicated on July 16, 2015. In 2017, Fred became too ill to live alone in such a remote area and moved to Sugar Land, TX for treatment.

Fred is survived by his sisters, Jeanne and Susan Wey, both of Sugar Land, TX; his nephews, Shawn Whitty and wife Shelly of Las Cruces, NM, and Aaron Wey and wife Jodi of Albany, NY; his nieces, Emily Wey of Denver, CO and Julie Jones of Austin, TX; as well as 3 grandnephews, and 5 grandnieces. Fred’s parents, Herbert and Dorothy Wey; his brother, Robert Wey; his sister, Nancy Whitty; and his nephew, Kurt Wey preceded him in death.

There will be a Memorial Mass to celebrate Fred’s life on Saturday, November 10, 2018 at 2:00 pm. The Mass will be held at St. John Chrysostom Byzantine Catholic Church, 5402 Acorn Street, Houston, TX 77092. Fred’s ashes will be buried in Mogollon, NM in a private ceremony at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Fred’s name to the American Cancer Society or the charity of your choice.
