Obituary for Jane Laine

Jane Laine, born Martha Jane Wall on August 7, 1928, passed away on December 3, 2018. She was the wife of Paul Laine, Jr., for 56 years. They had three children, Devon Elizabeth, Julia Lee, and Patricia Jill (deceased.) Grandchildren are Rachel Simons, Jack Kirk, and Dorothy Jane Young. Great-grandchildren are Samuel and Jackson Simons, and Daniel and Wendy Young.

Jane retired from the University of Texas Dental School.

In their younger years, Paul and Jane played lots of golf, went swimming often and traveled. Paul and Jane loved to go ballroom dancing every weekend.

She played the piano by ear. She could hear the music and immediately play anything.

Prayer services were held with immediate family members and Jane will be buried in Kentucky.

In lieu of flowers the family request that memorial contributions be made in Jane’s name to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd., Houston, TX 77030.

A few notes:

Granddaughter Rachel Simons: My Granlaine meant the world to me and losing her is so hard. I don’t want to say good-bye to a classy lady who brought smiles and laughter to my life. Even though she is gone, Granlaine left me a legacy of wonderful memories and good advice. When I was a child she would send me cards with spending money and she continued to do that with her great-grandchildren. Granlaine found the best Christmas presents. My boys still race around the house in their animal blankets she gave them last year. Music was an important part of my grandmother’s life. She loved to go dancing, and she played the piano beautifully. I’m thankful for the time I was able to have with my grandmother. She will be forever missed, but I look forward to seeing her again someday.

Granddaughter Dorothy Jane Young: I cherish the memories I have of GranLaine. Her love and dedication to her family was evident in many ways. She would regularly call, send cards and care packages, providing updates on how everyone in the family was and keeping us more connected. After she retired, she volunteered at a local elementary school helping children who were falling behind in reading. My grandmother was also active in church and gave time to the food bank, helping put together the different items that were given to those in need. She also donated large amounts of lemons, oranges and grapefruit that grew in her back yard. The tomatoes she grew were the best I have ever tasted. I can see her, after the weather forecast predicted freezing temperatures, putting blankets on her favorite decorative plants. She will be missed.
