Obituary for Laurita Louise Huebner Lyons

Laurita Louise Huebner Lyons passed away unexpectedly on Monday, December 17, 2018 in Houston at the age of 90. She was born on November 9, 1928 in Cameron, Texas to Louise and Herbert Huebner. Upon graduation from Yoe High School, Laurita ventured out to live and work in Houston, Texas. Her favorite job by far was working at the FBI where she made lifelong friends. In 1947, one of her agents introduced her to a charming Southern gentleman, Guy Moody Lyons, who was studying in the Rice Engineering Department. Laurita loved to reminisce about the fun times they had during their 3 year courtship. They were married in 1950 just before the Korean War called Laurita and her fighter pilot to be stationed in Santa Rosa, California.

When the conflict ended, however, Laurita and Guy did not hesitate at all and moved back to their all-time favorite city, Houston, Texas. They had two daughters, Monica Lyons Torres and Deidre Lyons Vedder. Laurita always said she most enjoyed the time when her daughters were students at Ross S. Sterling High School where Laurita was especially proud to serve as PTA President one year. She cherished earning her own BA in Elementary Education at the University of Houston once her girls were launched. Her family was also very proud of her accomplishment.

In retirement Laurita and Guy never missed a chance to attend a Naval Air Reunion and reconnect with Navy friends. They also became very active in the “Sociable Senior” group at St. Michael’s Catholic Church.

After her companion of over 60 years passed away in 2012, Laurita continued to find comfort and friendship at St. Michael’s, at the Memorial Athletic Club, and playing bridge at the Senior Activity Center.

Waiting in Heaven for Laurita were her parents; her beloved husband, Guy and sister, Dorothy Huebner Ciborowski. Laurita and Guy have five grandchildren, Dustin Torres, Monique Torres Joya, Travis Vedder, Austin Vedder, and Ross Vedder; two great-granddaughters, Alice Torres and Reese Kan Vedder. Laurita also loved her son in law, Wolf Vedder; her two granddaughter in laws, Jessica and Claudia; and grandson in law, Cris Joya.

A Funeral Mass will be held Friday, December 21, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Michael Catholic Church, 1801 Sage Rd, Houston, TX 77056, following the service you are invited to join us at Maggiano's Little Italy 2019 Post Oak Blvd. Houston, Texas 77056. Interment will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 12:00 p.m. at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.

Do not stand at my grave and weep
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the soft stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there. I did not die.
