Obituary for Robert L. Robbins

“Bob” was born in Canton, Ohio. He was the only child of Louis and Viola Robbins. He died from complications related to COPD/emphysema. Bob had a difficult childhood. He expressed issues of abandonment and in fact spent a great deal of time being raised by his paternal grandparents. He often called them mom and dad. Bob had a serious health condition that kept him hospitalized for almost a year when he was a teenager. His childhood sweetheart, Jean Shilling, stayed by his side throughout that ordeal and the remainder of her life. He overcame his health challenges and became a star high school football player. Jean was a cheerleader. They married at age 18. They raised 3 children, Jeff, Kay, and Todd by the time they turned 23.

After their marriage, the young family stayed on the move. A rough estimate tallied over 35 homes in 3 states (Ohio, Florida and Texas). Houston and the vicinity eventually became home for over 51 years.

Bob is preceded in death by his wife, Jean and son, Todd. He is survived by his son, Jeff and his wife, Linda Stanavitch and their children, Justin and Lauren; daughter, Kay and her husband, Danny McNair; Todd’s wife, Helen Vaughn and daughter Ellen.

His death was just 10 days short of the 1 year anniversary of the passing of his wife.

Bob was an intriguing man. He tried unsuccessfully to work for others on numerous occasions. He started many (too numerous to enumerate) business ventures on his own. He always had “a great idea”. He was a voracious reader. Kay would bring him books from the library at Clarewood House (the senior living center where he resided the last year of his life). He made it to the “S” section before his passing. He was a quick learner in life. He grasped everything from retail marketing, computer programming, court reporting to dispatching hot shot deliveries and transport. This is just a glance into the window of his mind. The final years of Bob and Jean’s lives were quite difficult. They lost their home and possessions to a fire and then suffered 2 recent floods within 16 months of each other. They were worn out. We pray that they are reunited, enjoying a deserved rest and are at peace.

The family would like to thank the staff at Clarewood House for everything they did to ensure Bob’s comfort and security. Words cannot express the gratitude felt for the staff of Houston Hospice for the in home visits at Clarewood House and to the inpatient staff that made his final days at their Holcombe location as comfortable as possible. God bless them for their dedication and loving compassion.

At Bob’s request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. If inclined, please make donations to the charity of your choice or to Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe Blvd. Houston, Texas 77030.
