Online Obituaries

Ola LaVerne Sprague, of Houston, passed away on November 30, 2017, at age 93, one week shy of her 94th birthday. Ola was born in Cushing, Oklahoma, on December 7, 1923, to Wesley and Sarah Cook. She grew up on a farm outside of Cushing and attended classes taught by Paul and Anna Vasser in a 2-room schoolhouse from Kindergarten through 8th grade. After graduation from 8th grade, Ola and her mom moved to Cushing, so she could attend high school and play basketball! Ola was baptized at First Baptist Church of Cushing at age 13. She was 18 years old when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, an event she remembered well. After WWII, Ola moved to Oklahoma City to work for Southwestern Bell. She was living at the YWCA and attending a Y outing when she met Jack Paul Sprague who was attending Hills Business College on a GI Bill. They married on October 16, 1949, at the Olivet Baptist Church in Oklahoma City. They had been married 54 years when Jack passed away in 2003. Jack took a position with General Mills and moved his wife and young daughter, Marsha, to Houston in 1956. The couple had two more daughters, Michele and Lanette and, when Lanette started school, Ola took a position at the new Sharpstown General Hospital as a telephone operator and worked there until she retired.

Jack and Ola were charter members of Sharpstown Baptist Church and, in a changing world, church remained a constant for the Sprague family. Ola served in many capacities in the young church-Sunday School teacher, Nursery Coordinator and Church Teller-but never sang in the choir because, as she would tell you, she couldnt carry a tune in a bucket! After retirement Jack and Ola traveled to every US state (except Maine) with Jacks sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and ET Prather. Ola enjoyed sewing, (a talent that served her well with three daughters) cooking (if you cook, they will come!) and playing with her 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren (spoil them and send them home!) Ola was a prayer warrior. She filled countless three-ring binders with her written prayers that have become a recorded history of the lives of her family and friends.

She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Sprague of Houston; daughter and son-in-law, Michele and Rex Webb of Austin; daughter and son-in-law, Lanette and Jim Alldridge of Jersey Village; grandson, Evan Webb and his wife Shaylee; grandson, Brandon Webb and his wife Lydia; granddaughter, Emily Shillings and her husband Clayton; grandson, Clark Alldridge; granddaughter, Lynley Alldridge; and seven great grandchildren, Campbell, Asher, Sadie and Bowen Webb; Barret and Carson Shillings, and Kiara Alldridge.
