Wells Raymond Rader passed away peacefully at age 83 on December 5, 2017 at The Abbey at Westminster Plaza in Houston, Texas. His daughter Amy, son-in-law Michael and granddaughter Whitney were at his side. Wells was known as W.R. to friends and relatives. He was born in Kansas City, Missouri to Wells Roy and Bertha Rovella Rader on August 13, 1934. He attended Paseo High School in Kansas City, Missouri and during that time became a much-decorated Eagle Scout. W.R. went on to Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas where he met the love of his life, Joyce Anne White. They married on their graduation and delayed the honeymoon in order to save enough money for a long and grand European tour. After working for a year in Gary, Indiana, W.R. and Joyce saved enough and sailed to Europe. On landing in Great Britain, they purchased a Hillman convertible sports car to take home with them as well as to drive extensively through Europe. These two people from the plains of Kansas, chose Denver, Colorado as the dream location to begin their family. They took a cross-country trip in their convertible starting from the port of New York, stopping along the way to visit friends and family in Kansas, made it to Denver and began their family.

The plan and execution of Joyce and W.R.s honeymoon set the pattern for their lives. Together they lived a life balanced between home and adventure. In Denver they had their son Mason Wells in 1961 and their daughter Amy Kathryn in 1962. W.R. began a job as an accountant at Shell Oil Company. That job would lead to a career that would encompass his working life. W.R. transferred with Shell Oil to New York City in 1966 and then to Houston, Texas in 1969. There were family vacations every year. After 36 years with Shell, W.R. retired devoting himself solely to enjoying life and family, one that now included a granddaughter by Amy, Whitney Anne. W.R. pursued his automotive and bicycling interests. With Joyce he enjoyed going to the ballet, movies, plays, dining and all Houston has to offer. In retirement Joyce and W.R. were either on a trip or in the process of planning their next adventure somewhere in the world.

W.R. was marked by intelligence, good humor and a gentle spirit. He made a perfect husband, father, grand and great grandfather to depend upon and love. As traveling companions, Joyce acting as guide, W.R. often at the wheel, they circled the globe many times, with stays in some 84 countries. With the passing of Joyce in 2006, nothing would ever be the same for the family. For W.R. a piece of his foundation was lost. The W.R. and Joyce love and partnership was a model to their son Mason and his wife Cassandra Lozano and daughter Amy and her husband Michael Lauber as well as to their granddaughter Whitney and her husband Ryan Stamper. W.R. happily lived to know and love Rylie and Luke, his great grandchildren by Whitney and Ryan.
