Rolwyn Stancel Thornton, 82, born on July 27, 1935 in Grice/Upshur, Texas went to be with our Heavenly Father on November 27, 2017. Rolwyn (Stan) was the eldest of three sons born to Faye Stovall (Hill) and C.J. Thornton and was a graduate of Rotan High School in Rotan, Texas. Stan was stationed in Germany with the United States Army from 1956-1960. There he met his wife Elisabeth and were married in 1958. In 1960, Stan and Elisabeth embarked on their life journey together as they moved to San Antonio, Texas. In 1963, Stan earned his Bachelor of Science, degree in Chemistry, and Bachelor of Arts, degree in German from the University of Texas in Austin.

He had a lengthy and respected career of 34 years (1963-1997) with Fisher Scientific, ascending from field salesman to Southwest Regional Sales Manager. During that time, the Thornton family moved from Austin, TX, to Foster City, CA and back to settle in Houston, Texas living for 30 years in Sharpstown and another 16 years in Sugar Land. During that time, Stan and Elisabeth had three wonderful children, travelled much of Europe with their singing friends at the LiederKranz of Houston, read many cowboy stories, attended operas and concerts, and eventually doted on seven adoring grandchildren. Stan lead not only the LiederKranz for many years, but as Vice President also helped plan trips for the local AARP group and could often be found lending tools to and connecting with dear neighbors. He had a stunning bass voice and could dance quite the polka, but he was also an accomplished cowhand and mechanic. Our own Renaissance man of his own making.

Stan is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Elisabeth. He is also survived by his daughter Jeanette and husband Peter Schwab of Glenview, Illinois; son Paul and wife Karin of Sugar Land, Texas and; daughter Monica and husband Juerg Zimmermann of Baar, Switzerland; Seven grandchildren, Kirsten, Katrina, Andrew, Reece, Cort, Erin and Finn, will dearly miss their Opa; mother Faye Stovall of Huntington, Texas; brother Troy Thornton of Houston, Texas; half-sister Rita and husband Don Chamblee of Huntington, Texas; half-brother Mike and wife Rebecca Thornton of Centerpoint, Texas; sister in law Marthel Fischer of Sulzbach, Germany and numerous nieces and nephews that he loved so dearly.
