Thomas Joseph Seward II, 87, passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018 surrounded by loved ones. He resided in Houston, TX and is a former resident of Fort Lauderdale, FL and Belle Mead, NJ.

He is survived by children, Michael R. Seward, of Miami, FL, Gregory R. Seward of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Kathryn MacKay and her husband Michael Plourde of Nashua, NH, Patricia A. Jordan and her husband Wayne Jordan of Houston, TX, Lisa Kirwan and her husband Michael Kirwan of Oradell, NJ; sister, Kathryn Seward Lambert of Doylestown PA; grandchildren, Caralie Seward, Dustin MacKay, Gregory Seward II, Maeve Kirwan, Ryan MacKay, Kevin Kirwan, Nicole Francescan Seward, Michael Kirwan; grand dogs, Tipsy and Lil’Bit.

Tom was born in the Richmond Hill section of New York City on April 2, 1931. He lived in New Jersey and then settled with his parents and sister in Easton, PA where he graduated from Wilson High School in 1949. During his teenage years Tom was active in the Boys Scouts of America reaching the level of Eagle Scout. Following in his father’s footsteps, he started his college career at Lehigh University but left college and enlisted in the Marine Corp rising to the rank of Captain before his honorable discharge from active duty and then serving in the reserves, completing his military career as a Major.

Continuing the Lehigh legacy which now spans four generations, he returned to Lehigh University to complete his college education receiving a Bachelor of Science degree majoring in Finance. Upon graduation from Lehigh, he began his long illustrious Wall Street career with Irving Trust Company in New York City later accepting a position with Oppenheimer & Co as Partner in charge of corporate finance and was a member of New York Stock Exchange. After leaving Oppenheimer, Tom relocated to Fort Lauderdale, FL where he raised the capital on two separate occasions to begin de novo financial institutions, a bank and a savings and loan serving as Chairman and CEO for each. In addition to his banking activities, he again applied his investment banking skills to raise the start-up capital for Hercules Offshore Drilling, located in Houston, TX where he remained until his retirement in 2005.

Tom possessed a strong passion for living life to the fullest which included actively contributing to his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. His love and devotion for family was primary in his life as a loving father who was “always there” for each of his six children and who put their interests above his own. He was a soothing voice of calm and reason, offering supportive comfort and advice whenever called upon by his children.

Tom’s two favorite times of the year were gathering with family each summer for the annual Family and Friends Week at his second home in the Bahamas and attending the annual football rivalry between Lehigh University and Lafayette College in Pennsylvania. He continued to support Lehigh University and furthered the Seward legacy by funding the Seward Family Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2006 granting its first scholarship award to an incoming freshman football player in 2007.

Tom enjoyed playing tennis frequently and tending to his gardens. As an avid diver, spearfisherman, and over-all lover of the sea, Tom had a profound love for the Bahamas which began over 45 years ago. He maintained a second home in Treasure Cay on the island of Abaco for many years. It brought him immense joy to share his passion for the island with family, friends, and the many colleagues of Hercules Offshore Drilling and their customers. Tom and his children and their friends spent many hours under the sea, catching fish and lobster and simply enjoying the beauty of all the sea creatures, especially the sharks (not everyone agrees on the latter, but Tom did).

A Memorial Gathering was held on Thursday, May 17, 2018 from 5:00PM to 8:00PM in Houston, Texas. A Memorial Services will be held on June 23, 2018 in Bethlehem, PA. Additional memorials will be scheduled for a later date in the Bahamas.
