Obituary for Mitchell Woodard

Mitchell Woodard, age 46 of Houston, passed away on July 5, 2018. He is preceded in death by his father, Mitchell Arlen Woodard, Sr; grandparents, Lola Woodard, Dave Woodard, Doris Corkern, and Richard Corkern. He is survived by his wife, Nicole Woodard; son Branden Gibson; mother, Irene Watassek; sister, Rachel Walser and brother-in-law Joe Walser; nephews, Nathan and Josh; nieces, Hannah, Danielle, and Abby.

Mitch was born on November 14, 1971 in Dayton, Ohio, resided in the Houston area for most of his life. He graduated from Sharpstown High School and attended Blinn College in Brenham, TX and Houston Community College. He was a devoted member of Berachah Church, the church where he grew up, and eventually of the MET Church where he was baptized. He worked a variety of jobs over the years, from a hotel front desk to restaurant delivery to being a full time caretaker of his stepfather, Guy Watassek. In 2014, Mitch married the love of his life, Nicole and became a father to her son, Branden. His greatest joy in life was being a husband and father to them.

In high school, Mitch took ballroom dancing lessons and even participated in local ballroom dancing competitions. Mitch loved sports- especially football- and he loved his Texas Aggies. If he wasn’t wearing a football jersey, he was probably wearing red, white, and blue. He loved his country and was a proud American. Family was of upmost importance to Mitch, and he valued so much time spent with his wife and son, a meal with his extended family, or a round of Monopoly with his cousins.

Mitch was known for always having a smile on his face, a man who was truly kind and gentle in spirit. He was quick to give hugs and was always sensitive to the needs of those around him. He took great joy in serving others. He loved the Lord and had great assurance of faith. Mitch’s character and temperament were most highlighted when he was diagnosed with cancer in February of 2017 and underwent aggressive surgery, chemo and radiation, which he completed last November. He endured a tough year with great determination and never complained. He was cancer free and recovering well, but in May, Mitch caught the flu, and developed pneumonia and a kidney infection that ultimately his immune system was too weakened to beat.

Mitch will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and all who knew him. He will always be remembered for his positive attitude, his smile, and his love for the Lord.

A Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, July 18, 2018 at 11:00 am, at 1510 Oyster Point Drive, Sugarland, TX, 77478. Casual attire, please wear maroon and white to honor Mitch’s love for the Aggies.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Aggie Leader Scholarship in memory of Mitchell A. Woodard, Jr. to the Texas A&M Foundation, 401 George Bush Dr., College Station, TX, 77840, or the charity of your choice.
